Nyxyss
[ New York City ]
evocative eastern violin meets crunk beats and subtle etheric sub-textures
Nyxyss is the creative collaboration between New York's ubiquitous underground DJ Haj (Sub Swara | Freek Factory | Church | CoSM) and fiery, ethereal violinist Hannah Thiem (Copal | Church | CoSM). The sound is lush and compelling, exploring the more melodic aspects of dubstep, idm and leftfield hip hop. Their sets are deftly crafted with an expansive sense of journey and an eye to the dancefloor. Deep, infectious, and evocative. Sounds like Claude Chalhoub meets Telefon Tel Aviv. Recent and upcoming performances include Gaian Mind (Maryland), PEX Summer Festival (Maryland), Raindance (Santa Cruz), Illuminarte (Guatemala), Alex Grey's CoSM Entheocentric Salons (NYC), Church @ Love (NYC).
Haj is founder and resident DJ for seminal New York crew's, Sub Swara, Freek Factory, and Church and is a resident at Alex Grey's Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (CoSM). For the last 5+ years he has been out front steadily pushing a fresh bass-heavy soundtrack for a re-emergent nyc underground. With both his original tracks and events he has showcased a conscious refutation of the conventional limitations of genre, and a refined obsession with quality. In the context of his solo DJ sets, and in his myriad collaborations, Haj continues to explore the meeting of the digital and analog worlds; where alien blips and synthetic sub-frequencies interface with the living breath of the violin, tablas and the human voice.
Hannah Thiem is the violinist/vocalist of Copal and violinist of Nyxyss, and performs as a soloist with DJs in New York, Boston, and San Francisco. Hannah accompanied hip hop icon Kanye West in New York (Madison Square Garden) and in Boston where they opened for The Rolling Stones. She is a resident at NYC's Church and Alex Grey's Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (CoSM). Hannah has studied classical, world, and jazz, with specific emphasis on Middle Eastern, Eastern European, Nordic, and Spanish Gypsy traditional styles. With her bands Copal, Nyxyss, Cyanide Valentine, or alongside DJs spinning dubstep, glitch-hop, or brokenbeat, Hannah's inspired melodic sense stirs both deep emotions and dancefloors.
